This year will be my first summer at home with my girls and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t super excited but kinda nervous at the same time. I mean, what the heck are we going to do all summer? I live in Georgia and in case you haven’t heard, let me tell you – it is H-O-T here. They don’t call it Hotlanta for nothing (by the way, no one who actually lives here calls in that). I’m originally a FL girl (where it’s even hotter) but definitely prefer the comfort of AC inside over the blazing outdoors. My kids, on the other hand, well… that’s a different story. Summer for them means one thing: water. We like to set up kiddie pools (with a slide), sprinklers, and a water table in our driveway and let the girls loose. The problem with that is they’re not old enough to be out there unsupervised, which means I have to sit out there
and melt with them. So today I’m going to share what I consider to be a mom’s essentials to surviving the summer with kids.
The kind you play in and the kind you drink. You need water to play in for the kids, of course, and water for you to stay hydrated. I love having refillable bottles around that keep my liquids cold and are easily transportable in case we decide to jump in the car and go for any reason (you never know).
Sun hats are not only super cute but they’ll keep you cool, too. They’re definitely a summer staple. Wearing one may make you feel like a “cool mom” (pun intended).
Because it’s bright, obvi.
You need a bathing suit that you can lift and play with your kids in. Save the super-cute strapless ones for when you’re not flying solo. A wardrobe malfunction would be unfortunate, don’t you think? I like to stick with something modest and functional when it’s just my girls and me. I prefer wearing a suit with them versus shorts because it dries easier
if when I get wet.
A Comfy Cover-Up
Say it’s lunchtime and you want to run out to grab a quick bite without getting dressed. Just throw on a comfy cover-up and go! I, admittedly, have way too many cover-ups but there is one that’s my go-to with my kids; it’s basically an oversized t-shirt designed to be a cover-up.
A Comfy Chair
One of my favorite purchases was my foldable beach chaise that I keep in the garage. I like to use it to get some rays while my girls are playing.
Not all sunscreen is created equal and what you use on your kids may not necessarily be the same you use for yourself. Sure, I know that the last thing you want to do is lather yourself up after wrestling your
bags of snakes kids to get theirs on but, your skin is just as important (if not more so, because age). I’ll be using Neutrogena Sheer Zinc™ sunscreen this year. Head to Target to grab some for yourself because it’s hypoallergenic, oil free, gentle on skin, sweat and water resistant for up to 80 minutes, and it won’t clog your pores! It’s also been dermatologist tested and offers superior UVA/UVB sun protection. Neutrogena Sheer Zinc™ is made with breakthrough Purescreen® technology which is powered by naturally-sourced, 100% zinc oxide. Suitable for sensitive skin conditions, Neutrogena Sheer Zinc™ was awarded the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance™!
I’m using Neutrogena Sheer Zinc™, SPF 30 Lotion, 3 oz. for my body and Neutrogena Sheer Zinc™, SPF 50 Face Lotion, 2 oz. for my face. The bottle sizes are perfect because I can toss them in my purse and be ready for impromptu park visits and such.
So, head over to Target and grab at least one of everything on this list. Also, if you don’t have these for the kids already, don’t forget to pick-up a:
- Water table
- Kiddie pool
- Bubble gun
Most importantly, though, pick up some Neutrogena Sheer Zinc™. Mine was in the Hand & Body Lotion section.
So tell me, what are your must-haves for summer? This mama is going to need all the help she can get!
